Our club was formed in October 1965, then known as the Darling Downs Lithophilic Society, where the 'secrets' of gem-cutting techniques were to be shared with everyone. Ever since then curiosity and thirst for knowledge have drawn people to the club to learn the art of lapidary - where stones, minerals or gemstones can be transformed into decorative items such as cabochons, engraved gems and faceted designs.
The club offers to it's members social events, field trips and silversmithing throughout the year as well as informative talks from gemologists. Training courses and special guest tutors share their skills during weekend workshops including 'free-form' cutting techniques, opal cutting, creating wire-wrapped and seed bead settings.
Competition cutting is encouraged with some members achieving a very high standard throughout Australia.
Every year our club organises the family-oriented event Gemfest, a weekend gathering which show-cases and sells gems and jewellery for the public from Toowoomba and surrounding regions to attend.
Other services requested by schools and organisations include giving talks on Earth Science topics, fossils, minerals and crystals. Gemstone identification can also be arranged with the club.
Our club is always open to new members.
