Territory Together is a Northern Territory not-for-profit organisation focused on removing everyday barriers to inclusion, independence and community participation.
We provide individualised disability and community supports and operate Territory Trims, our sensory-aware mobile haircare initiative.
Territory Trims was developed after recognising a gap that is easy to overlook: not everyone can simply walk into a salon, sit in a chair and have a haircut. Sensory overwhelm, disability, anxiety, communication needs, mobility, transport and unfamiliar environments can all create barriers to accessing basic haircare.
Rather than expecting the person to fit into a traditional salon environment, Territory Trims adapts the service around the person. This can include longer appointments, quieter options, visual supports, sensory resources, breaks, flexible pacing and an individual approach to communication and comfort.
The initiative is already progressing beyond an idea. We have received feedback from more than 200 community members, commenced real-world trials and appointments, and begun working alongside local disability services to understand what accessible haircare needs to look like in practice.
Our goal is to continue developing Territory Trims into a sustainable mobile service that can reach people in homes, disability and community services, aged-care settings and other accessible locations across Darwin and Palmerston, with the longer-term potential to reach regional and remote Northern Territory communities.
